Application for the Erasmus+ programme

When will the Erasmus+ call be published?

Calls for long study mobility (Erasmus+, Double Degree, Bilateral Agreements) are usually published in late November/early December. The deadline is at the end of January/beginning of February.

Where: on the open selection calls page of the UniTrento portal.

Is mobility to the UK still possible?

Yes, and from 2024/25 it's funded through Erasmus funds again

Is a second call scheduled to be published in the spring?

No, it is not guaranteed and is at the discretion of the Department. For 2025/26 mobility, it is planned to run the selections through a single call.

What do I have to do to participate in the Erasmus+ programme?

To participate in the Erasmus+ programme you must complete the online application by the deadline in the call and attach the required documentation.

Can I apply for other programmes (Double Degree, Bilateral Agreements, etc.) too?

Yes. In the event of the award of two or more mobility grants that are incompatible due to overlapping periods, you may choose which programme to take part in.

Destination selection

Can I apply for a shorter or longer period of mobility than stated in the call for applications?

No, during the selection phase we are obliged to respect the agreements made with the partners, so if the call for applications says that the grant is for 9 months (for example) the student must apply with a project that can cover the 9 months.

What does ESST mean?

ESST is an honours programme in Society, Science and Technology. More detailed information on the programme can be found on the Department of Sociology and Social Research's ESST programme page. When you see in the notes that the destination is an ESST partner, it means that we are inviting you to:

- Check that the partner's offer, with regard to the credit package they offer for ESST, is compatible with your educational pathway and interests (you will not be able to access all their educational offerings)

- Contact the destination contact person (and Prof Fairhall for Data Science) for more information on the destination university and to make an informed application

- Register for the programme by the deadline set by the Department

Knowledge of languages

What is the difference between ‘Language level required by the department at the deadline’ and ‘Language level indicated by partner university’?

The former is the minimum level to be admitted to the selection. The second is the level that must be acquired by the departure date at the latest. For all destinations, the Department of Sociology and Social Research requires at least a B1 in order to apply.

I have a language certificate, how do I know if it is recognisable?

If you only intend to use it to apply for mobility, please consult the list provided by the CLA

How do I know if my certificate is still valid?

Unless an expiry date is clearly indicated on the certificate, for the CLA it is valid for 5 years from the date of issue of the certificate (if the certificate has expired but has been registered in your UniTrento booklet, all you need to do is select the option declaring that's it's already recorded in your Esse3 profile. Registration ‘cancels’ the expiry date as far as participation in mobility programmes is concerned)

I have attended a course at CLA and passed the end-of-course profit test. Is this sufficient to certify that I have the required language level?

No, the end-of-course test has the sole purpose of testing the level reached by the student at the end of the course attended and, if passed, allows enrolment in a subsequent CLA course at the next level, within one year of the end of the course. In order to pass the Department language exam and to acquire the relevant credits, the student must take the exam at CLA.

What happens if I do not acquire the language level required by the partners by the deadline?

You will have to postpone your departure to the following semester or give up your mobility.

Study project

How do I fill in the study project?

The project must be filled in by entering in the first part the motivations (personal and educational) that lead you to apply for the Erasmus programme and for that particular destination(s). In the table(s) you must indicate the activities you would like to do abroad and what you expect to be recognised in your Unitrento career.

How many credits should I enter?

Bearing in mind that at UniTrento you should maintain a pace of around 30 credits per semester, your training project should contain at least 20/30 credits per semester.

How do I find out which courses are offered at the partner university?

You need to go to the partner university's website and search for the published course offerings. You can get an idea of the examinations recognised in previous years by consulting the tables published on the Partner university page or by writing to mobility-ssh@unitn asking for a screenshot of the latest learning agreements submitted for that destination

Can I select courses offered in different academic years or at different degree courses?

Yes. Unless the partners impose different limits, you can select courses offered in the first, second or third year and you can choose from among the different degree courses offered in the department with which you have an agreement (please note that this may result in overlapping timetables for some classes, but this information will not be available until 1-2 months after departure)

Can I take exams from other departments? (Example: I am enrolled in International Studies but want to take an exam from the history department at my partner university)?

If recognisable as a career, yes. Again, you must check whether the partners impose different limits on access to courses from departments not directly involved in the exchange agreement.

Can I also take examinations in a language other than that of my partner university? (example: German university, I have B1 German but want to attend courses in English)

Yes, if you meet the requirements set by your partners

If I leave in my second year, can I only do second-year exams in Erasmus at UniTrento?

You are not obliged to take only 2nd year courses, you can also make up exams from the 1st year or anticipate exams from the 3rd year.

How do I know which exams I will have to take next year?

By consulting the student handbook for your year of enrolment

Can I seek advice from the lecturer responsible for my destination?

Yes, you can consult the destination contact person for information about the partner university (but first write to mobility-ssh [at] unitn.it, we may already have the answers you need), but you must fill in the training project yourself.

I would like to go on Erasmus to do dissertation research. What should I enclose?

You must enclose with your application a letter of acceptance from your tutor at the partner university and a letter of support from your supervisor

Ranking and destinations allocation

When will the ranking list be published?

The ranking list will be published by the date specified in the call for applications published on the active calls page. Instructions on how to accept the awarded scholarship will also be provided at that time.

Can I renounce an assigned destination and apply for the second call?

As there should be no second call, renouncing the assignment resulting from the first call will result in exclusion from any subsequent selections (unless the Department Erasmus delegate assesses the reasons given as not incompatible with a new application).

Do I have to achieve a minimum number of credits to obtain the grant? If yes, how many? What happens if I do not reach the minimum level?

The minimum number of credits to be obtained is written in the call for applications and the financial agreement. Failure to reach this threshold will result in the return of the grant
