SMMS (Migration scenarios and social changes) is a study unit of the Department of Sociology and Social Research, creating a dialogue platform for students, researchers and people working in this field, aimed at producing studies, documents, training and qualified research on contemporary migration processes and the consequent social changes.

The study unit aims at fostering the development, in Italy, of rigorous programmes of empiric research on international migration, favouring the exchange and sharing of the research results, also through the systematic publishing of gathered data and of the procedures used to produce them.

The unit also participates in the international research studies on the spatial mobility kinds in the contemporary societies, aiming at favouring the analysis of social changes deriving from this kind of mobility, not only in the receiving countries, but also in the origin and transit countries. To this end it promotes comparative research and it pursues initiatives aimed at supporting the presence of Italian researchers at international level in theoretical and empiric research on migration flows.
The main focus of the study centre is Trentino, which is an increasingly attractive area for various migration flows, to then enlarge its work towards institutions, organizations and research insitutes.

The topics on which the SMMS researchers are currently working are:

  • Ethnic segregation, assimilation and social cohesion;
  • Irregular migration systems;
  • Second generation migrants;
  • Female migrants;
  • Models of sociability, migration paths and integration of migrants;
  • Developments of the sociological theory of international migrations and ethic relations.

The founding members of the study centre are:
Professor Giuseppe Sciortino (Scientific director), Mrs Francesca Decimo
