Giuseppe Sciortino

Giuseppe Sciortino received a Ph.D. in sociology and social policy from the Università di Bologna in 1993, and he is currently a full professor in the Department of Sociology at the Università di Trento. His main research interests include social theory, cultural sociology, and migration studies.
He has been the chair of the Research Committee on Sociological Theory (RC16) of the International Sociological Association (2010-14). Giuseppe Sciortino has been invited as a visiting professor by Haverford College, the Royal University of Phnom Penh, Yale University, and the University of Malmö.

He is a faculty fellow at the Center for Cultural Sociology of Yale University and he serves currently as a member of the coordinating committee for the Civil Sphere Theory Working Group (https://www.cstnetwork.org/about). He is on the editorial board of the journals American Journal of Cultural Sociology, Migration Studies, and Migration Letters.

He has published in peer-reviewed journals such as American Journal of Economics and Sociology, American Sociologist, Ethnic and Migration Studies, Ethnicities, Ethnic and Racial Studies, European Journal of Migration and Law, European Journal of Social Theory, International Sociology, International Migration, Italian Politics and Society, Journal of Comparative Policy Analysis, Journal of Classical Sociology, Journal of Modern Italian Studies, Migration Letters, Perspectives on European Politics and Society, Population, Space and Place, Sexualities, and Sociological Theory.

He is the author of the books Great Minds. Encounters with Social Theory (Stanford UP, 2011, with Gianfranco Poggi), Foggy Social Structures. Irregular Migration, European Labour Markets and the Welfare State, (Amsterdam UP, 2011, with Michael Bommes) and Rebus immigrazione (Il Mulino, Bologna). He has also edited Solidarity, Justice and Incorporation (Oxford University Press, 2015, with Peter Kivisto), The Cultural Trauma of Decolonization (Palgrave, 2019, with Ron Eyerman), and Populism in the Civil Sphere (Polity, 2021, with Jeffrey C. Alexander and Peter Kivisto).

 
He is currently editing the Research Handbook on the Sociology of Migration (Edward Elgar, with Martina Cvajner and Peter Kivisto) and writing, with Martina Cvajner, a cultural history of the sexual revolution.

He likes trekking, new recipes, and science fiction. He is the (often puzzled) father of Matilde, Ginevra, and Elia Arjuna Sciortino.
